By September, the holiday has become a story. The long wait at the airport, the rain on day three, the row about which restaurant, most of it is gone. What stays is the view from the terrace and the good meal on the last night. People are not lying to themselves when this happens. It is how memory works, and it has direct consequences for anyone who asks consumers to look back and rate an experience.

Two lines of research explain the gap between the trip you had and the trip you keep. One is about how the whole memory drifts. The other is about which moments survive.

The rosy view

In the 1990s, Terence Mitchell and Leigh Thompson asked a simple question: does an experience feel the same before, during, and after it happens? They tracked real trips, twelve days in Europe, a Thanksgiving break, three weeks on a bike across California, and rated them at each stage.

The pattern held every time. People looked forward to the trip, felt more mixed while they were in it, then remembered it as better than they had scored it in the moment. Mitchell and Thompson called it the rosy view.

Part of what drives it is that bad feelings fade faster than good ones. The sunburn, the delays and the small arguments lose their weight, while the good moments keep theirs. A few days later the average of the trip has moved up, even though none of the actual days changed.

The peak and the end

Sitting underneath the rosy view is a second effect that tells us which moments do the surviving. Daniel Kahneman and his colleagues found that when people judge an experience afterwards, they lean on two points: the most intense moment, and how it ended. The length barely counts. A short trip with a great final day can beat a long one that fell apart at the airport.

The rule started in a lab, in studies of pain, but it holds up in the field. A 2025 study followed real tourists through their trips and measured how they felt as they went. What predicted their overall verdict, and whether they meant to come back, was not the whole trip. It was the peaks and the ending.

One caution. The peak-end rule is real, but it is not a law of nature. Later work shows it is stronger in some settings than others, and that people do not ignore length entirely. Use it as a lens for reading experience data, not a formula to plug numbers into.

What this means for your studies

Put the two together and you get a plain warning for research. When you ask a consumer to recall a purchase, a service, a trip or a product test, you are not measuring what happened. You are measuring a memory that has already been edited, warmed up by the rosy view and shaped by a couple of peak moments.

That changes practical choices. When you place a satisfaction question matters as much as how you word it. Ask during the experience, right at the end, or a week later, and you are measuring three different things. If you want to know how a product actually performed, catching people in the moment beats asking them to look back. If you want to know what they will tell a friend, or whether they will buy again, the remembered version is the one that drives behaviour, so that is the one to measure.

None of this makes recall useless. It makes it specific. The remembered trip is not a weaker copy of the real one, it is its own thing, and it is often the better predictor of what people do next. The work is knowing which of the two you are looking at.

So the next time a study opens with "thinking back over the last month", the question to settle first is what you actually want: the experience, or the memory of it. They are rarely the same, and only one of them books the next holiday.
